Eiko with Ann Carlson at UCLA

Eiko returned to California for another residency period at CAP (Center for the Art of Performance) UCLA from October 17-25, with a public performance on October 24, 2019.

Eiko’s residency time at CAP UCLA was spent to further develop her Duet Project: Distance is Malleable. During the residency, Eiko created a video that illuminated the history of the duet project up to date. The projection of that and another video created during her travels throughout California with Alexis Moh and Marjorie Hunt were incorporated into the live performance. Eiko also invited choreographer and friend Ann Carlson to experiment together.

Eiko’s previous UCLA CAP research residencies were in October 2018 and April 2019, during which she spent time with local LA artists and went on a roadtrip to visit ecologically sensitive sites. Eiko traveled widely and deeply recognized that California and its landscape illuminates so many of the problems we are facing both regionally and globally elsewhere.
