Charlee B Mize on Elegies (November 2019)

“Elegies” video by Eiko and John R. Killacky touched me immensely. I found meaning in John’s admittance that he was proud to be his mother’s son; this is something I don’t think a lot of people consider every day. I understand his fear: not of death, but of waiting. A death brings your own (that of a witness) tears and sorrows. Your own reactions and feelings conjure up with the death of someone you care about. Eiko’s words were extremely moving, and the feelings she shares are pure and relatable; how if we fail a parent, we forever inhabit the role of their child, and we cannot live in regret. There is peace in finding
differences in happiness between family members; that acceptance can take a lifetime. I liked hearing about how her mother took on various aspects of her tradition; her choice of kimono, and sacrifice of giving up red bean for Eiko’s good fortune.
