Duet Project at TBA Festival in Portland, OR

In September 2019, Eiko returned to Portland for the first time since she and Koma performed Offering in 2003 from PICA's inaugural TBA Festival. Eiko presented both past works of her A Body In Places project and new performances and creations from her Duet Project: Distance is Malleable.

She opened the festival with a performance at PNCA on September 5, performing throughout the gallery space that also showed her photo exhibition of A Body In Places (on view until October 24). She shared a 50 minute version of her A Body In Fukushima film, which collects William Johnston's photo of Eiko in irradiated Fukushima, in a video lecture event at Northwest Film Center on September 9. Finally, she performed an iteration of the Duet Project with collaborators Ishmael Houston-Jones and Iris McCloughan at PICA on September 12, 13, and 14.

Eiko received an overwhelming response from attendees of the festival, many of whom remembered her from her first appearance there in 2003. Read an interview with Eiko on her work in Portland, and a review (Portland Mercury) of the various events.
