Hunger* (2008)

Co-commissioned by the Walker Art Center and the Joyce Theater
An evening-length collaboration with Charian, Peace and Joko Sutrisno

Charian (Chakreya So, age 19) and Peace (Setheap Sorn, age 20), two of the young Cambodian visual artists-turned-performers, who played main roles in Eiko & Koma's 2006 Cambodian Stories, worked with Eiko & Koma on reviving Grain (2007) and in creating Cambodian Stories Revisited (2007) and Quartet (2007). Setting their 1983 duet Grain on Peace and Charian in 2007 at ADF made Eiko & Koma want to revisit its elemental theme of hunger and human relationship to food but on a vaster scale. The evening includes passages from Eiko & Koma’s Rust(1989) and Grain as well as Charian and Peace’s live painting. Gamelan musician Joko Sutrisno played live for the Joyce Theater and Walker Art Center engagements.

Developed during the residencies at Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY), and the Maggie Alessee National Center for Choreography at Florida State University (Tallahassee)
